Original ideas for eco-friendly gifts wrapping

For the holiday season, rethink your gift packaging and reduce waste by choosing eco-friendly alternatives. Did you know that most metallic or shiny wrapping paper is not reusable? According to a 2017 study, it is estimated that approximately 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and gift bags are thrown in the trash every year in Canada [1].

In order to have a slightly greener Christmas this year, we offer 4 original tips to wrap your gifts in a greener way.

1. Give a second life to your newspaper and old magazines

All papers can be converted to packaging: just choose your favourite option! Newspaper clippings, kraft paper, magazines, an old map, comics...

2. Use bandanas and other recycled fabrics

A superb solution to add a touch of color under the tree! There are many techniques available online for making elegant knots without tape. If you do not have bandanas or fabrics on hand, you can go to the thrift store.

3. Collect threads, strings and ribbons

For a nice rustic and plastic-free alternative, replace the adhesive tape with string. You can also keep ribbons and other items of interest all through the year.

4. Use natural decoration

The next time you play outside, take the opportunity to pick up a few fallen branches and twigs to add a decorative touch to your gifts. For the more motivated, you can also use dried fruit and a few cinnamon sticks.
